Insurance and Therapy in Utah: What Select Health, United, and EMI Actually Cover
By Rose Andre, CMHC
One of the biggest barriers to starting therapy isn't finding a therapist — it's figuring out what your insurance actually covers before you commit to anything. In Utah, three of the most common plans I see are Select Health, United Healthcare, and EMI Health, and each one handles mental health coverage a little differently.
Select Health
Select Health, based right here in Utah, generally covers outpatient mental health services as part of most of its plans, though your specific copay and session limits depend on your exact plan tier. It's worth calling the number on your card and asking specifically about "outpatient behavioral health" coverage, since that's the term most plans use rather than "therapy."
United Healthcare
United Healthcare plans vary more widely depending on whether you have an employer plan, a marketplace plan, or Medicare-adjacent coverage. Most standard plans include mental health parity coverage (meaning it's treated similarly to physical health visits), but copays and whether a diagnosis is required for reimbursement can differ significantly.
EMI Health
EMI Health, historically built around Utah's education employees but now offering broader plans, typically includes outpatient mental health benefits as well. As with the others, the practical details — session caps, referral requirements, copay amounts — depend on your specific plan.
What to Actually Ask
Rather than guessing, call the member services number on your insurance card and ask these exact questions: "Do I have outpatient mental health / behavioral health coverage?" "What is my copay per session?" "Is there a session limit per year?" "Do I need a referral?" Write down the answers — you'll want them handy when you're scheduling.
In my own practice, I'm in-network with Select Health, United, and EMI, and private pay is always an option if your specific plan doesn't align. If you're not sure where you stand, reach out and we can help you figure it out before your first session, not after.
