Starting Over in the Salt Lake Valley: Building a Life After Divorce or Breakup
By Rose Andre, CMHC
After a divorce or a long relationship ends, a strange thing happens to familiar places. The restaurant in Sugar House you used to go to every anniversary. The trailhead in Millcreek Canyon you hiked together every fall. Murray's own downtown streets, if that's where you built a life together. The valley doesn't change, but your relationship to it does, and rebuilding a life here means renegotiating that relationship, not leaving it behind.
You Don't Have to Reclaim Everything At Once
Some places will feel fine right away. Others will need time, and a few might never feel neutral again, and that's allowed. You don't need a strategy to "take back" every shared memory in the valley. Some places you'll simply build new associations with over time; others you might just avoid for a season, or permanently, without that being a failure of healing.
Practical Starting Points
Rebuilding tends to go better when it's concrete rather than abstract. Instead of a vague goal like "find myself again," something like joining one new group activity, trying one new hiking trail you never went to together, or reconnecting with one friendship that got quieter during the relationship gives your nervous system something real to move toward.
The Emotional Work Underneath the Practical Work
The logistics — new routines, new places, new rhythms — matter, but they're not the whole picture. Underneath them is usually a quieter question: who am I when I'm not building a life around someone else's plans? That question doesn't get answered by a new hobby. It gets answered slowly, in therapy and in life, as you make choices based on what you actually want rather than what you're used to.
If you're rebuilding in the Salt Lake Valley and it feels harder than it should, that's not a sign you're doing it wrong — it's a sign you're doing something genuinely difficult, in a place that holds a lot of history. That's exactly the work I do with clients in Murray and across the valley.
